Bangkok - Cabbages and Condoms

Saturday night. Too tired and too hot to go anywhere special after a day of walking around, we asked our hotel to recommend somewhere nearby for a Thai meal. We were told to go to "C and C" and when we gt there and saw the name actually stands for Cabbages and Condoms we thought huh? We hesitated but decided to give it a try anyway.

Apparently the restaurant and gift shop proceeds are given to the Population and Community Development Association to promote better understanding of family planning, hence the name. Now we got it. The place is decorated with condoms and there are cheesy slogans everywhere like "our food is guaranteed not to cause pregnancy". You can also buy the t-shirts...a bit dreadful I have to say.

Now the food. We didn't really have too much hope cos the place was full of expats and tourists. The menu had all the usual suspects and we decided to pig out anyway.

The spring rolls were freshly fried but nothing too extraordinary. I think when it comes to spring rolls I prefer the Vietnamese versions with glass noodles and pork inside.

Papaya salad. The dressing was nice and zingy and we liked the fact that it's not drowned with fish sauce and dried prawns.

Fried chicken with basil. It looked harmless but it was FIERCE! It took a while for us to figure out what was causing our tongues to burn and we found the culprit. The chicken was full of chili seeds and while I would normally love it I was worried that I would get contractions!

Stir fried morning glory. A bit too garlicky and too greasy.

Some kind of beef fried with red curry paste. It was probably the best dish of all. loved the sauce and the beef was tender and tasty.

Last but not least mango with sticky rice. It was an excellent dish to finish off the meal. We ate so many mangoes I wondered if we would turn yellow?
Overall the service was good and the food was above average, and certainly exceeded our expectations. Will go back again if we are staying nearby.
